Why do I Serve?

Service is something we all know well. We understand the concept or meaning and the incredible ways it can completely change someone’s life. But why do we do it?

This is the question I found myself asking, “Why do I serve?” When others see one mission trip after another, do they understand there is something deeper besides making others feel good?

The real question I am asking is, “How well does my life represent the Gospel?”

Now, this is a daunting question - no joke, but one that begs to be answered by every individual who calls themself a Christian.

In my Young Adult group at church, our theme or vision for the year is founded on 1 Peter 3:15:

“But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”

This is why.

To remind others...

there is hope
there is freedom
there is peace
there is joy
there is life

This is the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

To bring the hope of Jesus Christ to the hurting and broken places of the world. If we take a moment to look around in our daily routines, we will pause and notice there are others around us who are hurting or simply searching for something deeper. I believe God can use us anywhere - as those who are His - carry the kingdom of God wherever we go.

This is why I serve.

I serve to bless others usually by meeting a physical need first, but in the name of Jesus. It is through these acts of service that relationships are built, conversations are shared, prayers are answered and the love of Christ is shown through the sacrifice of time, money, and comfort. We serve others not to make ourselves feel better or to seek something in return. Rather we serve to show what a life of sacrifice and joy can look like.

Now this service I am talking about can be shown in a variety of ways. It can look like serving on a mission trip, leading a small group, paying for the person behind you, volunteering at church, delivering a home-cooked meal to a neighbor, or praying for a stranger in the middle of the grocery store.

Currently, the assignments God has called me to revolve around missions, students, young adults, and using my creativity for God’s glory. I have a few ways I am walking in obedience to His call. Some are new and daunting, while others may feel familiar and exciting. Nonetheless, He is calling each one of us to participate in His kingdom. To carry the love of Jesus and bring the hope of the Gospel to those hurting around us.

Now the best part about all of these avenues of service is they point back to the Gospel.

The Gospel is why I serve.

It is my purpose and I believe it can be a part of your story if it isn’t yet (if you have questions about Jesus or the Gospel send an email here). But if you do know Jesus I would encourage you to take some time with God and consider the question below.

Where is God calling you to serve?
